To say it’s been a stressful week would be an understatement, so why not direct that stress into a Netflix true-crime series instead?

Carmel: Who Killed Maria Marta, which began streaming on Netflix today, is a new four-part Argentinian docuseries from director Alejandro Hartmann. While hardcore true crime fans may know the details already, the case of María Marta García Belsunce’s murder—one of Argentina’s most controversial and scrutinized criminal cases—may be new, especially to American audiences. Here’s what you need to know before you stream Carmel: Who Killed Maria Marta? on Netflix.

Who was María Marta García Belsunce?

Before her death in 2002, Belsunce was a sociologist and had served as vice president of the Missing Children Argentina foundation, according to a report from CNN Radio in Argentina. She was 50 years old when she died.

How did María Marta García Belsunce die?

On October 27, 2002, Belsunce’s body was found in her bathtub in her house in Pilar, Argentina, which was part of a gated community named “Carmel.” She had been shot five times in the head.

Before the autopsy was performed, officials ruled her death a freak accident, caused by her slipping and hitting her head. The burial process had begun with no further investigation until Belsunce’s stepbrother sounded the alarm that foul play might be involved. After the autopsy, Belsunce’s husband Carlos Carrasosa was put on trial for her murder. Several people who were in the house in the hours after Belsunce died—including her brother and a masseuse—were also charged with trying to cover up the crime. According to a 2004 report from The Baltimore Sun, the prosecution in the case said Carrasosa was involved in the drug cartel and killed Belsunce when she threatened to expose him.

In 2007, Carrasosa was acquitted, but two years later, that decision was appealed and he was found guilty of Belsunce’s murder. But, in yet another twist, after serving five years in prison, Carrasosa was acquitted in 2016 after DNA analysis found that his blood didn’t match up with the samples found at the crime scene, according to a report from Radio Times.

In other words, the cases of María Marta García Belsunce is a bit of a rollercoaster. If you want to hop on the ride, then tune in to Carmel: Who Killed Maria Marta?, which is now streaming on Netflix.
