The Class 4A 8th-ranked West Delaware Hawks improved their record to 18-6 with a 3-0 win over Maquoketa last night inside Seedorff Gymnasium. The Hawks won 31-29, 25-22 and 25-12 in a match that lasted one hour and seven minutes.
Class 2A No. 5 Beckman spoiled Class 3A #1 Mount Vernon’s undefeated season and ended the Mustangs 22-match win streak. The Blazers improved to 16-4 with a 3-2 road victory, winning sets one 26-24, two 25-21 and five 16-14.

Independence shut out Vinton-Shellsburg 3-0 at home
Cascade had a 3-1 road win over Camanche
East Buchanan was blanked by Springville 3-0
The West Delaware Boys won the 12-team Vinton-Shellsburg Invitational with 41 points, clipping Cedar Rapids Jefferson who scored 43. Benton Community was 4th with 118, 5th was CR Xavier with 142. Tenth was Independence and 12th was Beckman.
Individually for the Hawks senior Cael Meyer was 3rd with a 17:48.7. In 6th place, Robinson Martinez with a 18:07.9. 7th was Tyger Vaske with a 18:08.9. Senior Staveley Maury was 12th in 18:44.5. Freshman Zach Wenger finished 13th in 18:44.9. Senior Matthew Mensen finished 16th in 18:46.2. Senior Blake Smith was in 2nd place through 2 1/2 miles when he was injured in a fall. He finished the race in 24th place with a time of 19:26.5. The JV Hawks won in more dominating fashion with 22 points, twenty points ahead of CR Jeff. Andrew Salas once again led the JV with a first place finish in 19:00. Senior Jacob Wenger was 3rd in 19:47.1.Senior Nicholas Stocks was 4th in 19:50.6. Freshman Nick Mensen was 6th in 20:12.5. Junior Ethan Hoefer finished in 8th with a time of 20:36.6.
Ten teams competed in the Girls Varsity race. Hudson was first with 42, Benton Community 2nd with 54. West Delaware 5th with 144, 8th was Beckman and Independence 9th.
Marleigh Louvar led Indee and finished in 4th place with a 21:41.3. WD Sophomore Faith Litterer was 21st with a 23:55.4
